ABOUT ATANAS (AJ) PETKOV

Aj Lounge the beginning?

The Lounge was launched about five years ago, along with my first steps in professional photography. Under the first steps, understand the purchase of professional grade technique, not the quality of my photos. I already knew exactly what I was going to shoot and practically, with research, took the necessary equipment. I went through the "must have everything" phase in the lower class, typical of a lot of startup photographers.People think that big and black camera means professional. It's like saying that traveling with wagon is a luxury trip. It took me years before I decided to create "The Lounge", not because of my lack of courage, but because of my desire to make the product that I introduce myself watchable. Looking at my photos from that period, I can see how I grew up and at the same time I say to myself "what the...". I categorically ruled out intrusive "photography" that any self-respecting "photographer" should add to its title, but five years later... How else will people understand?

Do I hold the high quality of work and professionalism?

One of my useful deviations is the attention to the detail. I happened to process a picture for hours and arrange it literally point by point. Realistically, what viewers can see can be completed in a few minutes with a few software maneuvers. I've come back to clear a point that no one would see, but I know it's there. Recently, I have shortened the process and decided that I would stick closer to reality. My new philosophy is to leave the magic defects and avoid the extremes of toning. I often experiment by contrasting the model with the surroundings.I put it in an atypical environment to evoke different emotions and feelings. We all like photography details in a home atmosphere, but in my opinion, a significant part of the frame message is hidden in the background. It is for this reason that I am constantly looking for new and interesting locations to shoot. I did not have enough maturity to understand and appreciate black and white photography with a lot of noise. It pulled me in the other direction - detail, clear and color, which is why I am a supporter of the new technologies and the uncompromising quality they provide.

Is the moment more important or the preparation to create the moment?

A significant part of my shooting is almost complete improvisation, and I have eventually decided where to shoot. I joke with my models that they can have a perfect shot of the bench in front of the house, and I believe myself... they don't. There is a million ideas in my head and some more to combine with. In the process of shooting I see other stories, which can change the concept in a second. I am not afraid to experiment, and to carry out my photographic ideas boldly and with scope, as far as possible, of course. The rest of the time, the pictures happen with careful planning, especially if more people I work with are involved. Getting to know the situation, selecting models for the photo shoot, choosing professional makeup artists, clothing, etc. My only prerequisite when shooting my stuff is that the model is prepared and executive.

A photographer makes you:

- The photographic equipment you have
- The sense of seizing the moment
- That you know every technical detail of your camera.

A photographer makes you perfectly aware and working with the camera you have. A practice that allows you to change the camera settings in seconds without looking at it. The photographer makes you shoot in M (manual) mode, without exception, telling the camera what to do. You're supposed to be the more than the camera itself. A photographer makes you see the light and when you need to model it. But the most important thing to be a photographer is intelligence, outlook and a pinch of madness. Way to go...

What about smartphone photography? Has it changed the perception of photography? Is the device you're shooting really important? Is it important to be online, have thousands of followiers and likes on social networks to be a successful photographer?

It depends on the photographer's priorities and understanding. Whether to have a diploma, sell well and / or bathe in adoration. I am looking to balance between these things. Today if you want to sell your photography you must be closely linked to social platforms. In an economic aspect, it is much better to invest in online advertising than to make a real exhibition. You may be a brilliant photographer, but if you are not active, even aggressive and do not show up online, chances are that no one will know you exist.

Do i have my idols in photography? Anyone i have studied and still learning from?

I admire a few Bulgarian authors that we need to learn from. Nacho Kamenov - kubeto, not only because of the photography, but also because of the man and his energy. Kalin Kostov - different, perfect, original. The two of them are beautiful in different ways. I do not copy or influence. If anyone wants to refute me by saying that he has already seen it, I will say that if no one has seen it, then it will be heard. I also follow a few international names. Sasha Leyendeker, Polina Rabtseva, Kristina Casarina, Amanda Diaz, Sean Archer. My absolute favorite is Elena Shumilova. She creates the most beautiful photographic tales I have seen. The idols in my life are my parents and Putin.

Photography is a lifelong hobby. Is it my job? Do i have any other favorite hobbies?

Hedonism does not allow me to work, I have fun. For many years, I was drawn to power sports, before wine prevailed, which means I carry both drinking and fighting. I still find time for sports, despite my old age - chess and tai chi in the park. I am interested in new technologies and gadgets and the advantages they give, because in my opinion the way is ahead. Personally, I work on being a better man, smiling, not trying to change people (it's not easy with that face and character) and learning not to even say "thank you", whether raising him or her requires. But don't forgot to thank anyway.

Finally i will say something personal to the people who read all of this. I will never be like you or you like me - be individual. There is no impossible frame, which probably applies to your dreams and ambitions. Read between the lines. Don't be a slave to the system. Remember the words "thank you," "please," "excuse," "love," and true human values. Be good, be a man.
